About the Company

Mukutan Conservancy is a conservation and community enterprise landscape in Laikipia that integrates ecological restoration with sustainable livelihoods. Through innovative nature-based enterprises, Mukutan works with local communities to restore degraded land, reduce wildfire risk, and create income opportunities linked to sustainable products.

One such initiative addresses the invasive shrub Leleshwa (Tarchonanthus camphoratus), a species known for dense growth and high wildfire risk. Because the shrub regenerates rapidly once coppiced, it provides an ideal renewable source of wood fuel for biomass and eco-charcoal production.

Harvested along fire-management blocks, the wood is processed using efficient Adam Retort Kilns which combust by-products and produce minimal pollution. The Soul Coal Eco-Charcoal project engages more than 50 women and youth, producing high-quality, carbon-neutral charcoal while creating meaningful employment.

Mukutan also runs the Mukutan Wild Honey Project, established in 2016 in partnership with the local Pokot community to promote environmental stewardship and sustainable income generation.

The conservancy has installed 150 Langstroth hives within its boundaries and supported the community with 200 Langstroth hives and 600 Kenya Top Bar hives. Mukutan has further equipped community members with 1,000 modern beehives and apiary training, creating a thriving honey and bee-products enterprise aimed at Kenya’s retail market.

The project operates through 40 women and youth groups, which are expected to collectively generate USD 75,000 – 150,000 annually once the hives reach full production.

Apiaries are strategically placed across the conservancy to utilize the diverse forage flora, many of which have medicinal properties. Mukutan is also developing a floral calendar to better understand seasonal nectar flows. Alongside the honey enterprise, a tree-planting initiative is restoring indigenous bee-forage species lost in surrounding community areas due to unsustainable charcoal production
